Abstract
The use of essential oils extracted from aromatic plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of the body, mind and spirit is known as aromatherapy, or essential oil therapy. The main objective of this study is to understand the process of popularizing the use of essential oils as an integrative health promotion practice. 96 customers of a compounding pharmacy were selected for this study during the years 2019 and 2020. The study participants answered a questionnaire that asked about style and quality of life, how they got to know aromatherapy, and how this therapy impacted their health. Most participants who reported clinical improvement observed a decrease in symptoms in the first month of continuous use of essential oils. The most cited effect was emotional, with improvements in levels of anxiety and depression. Most participants in this study recommend the use of aromatherapy because it is an economically viable and easily accessible therapy. Therapy with essential oils, linked to awareness of the importance of healthy eating, regular physical activity and restful sleep, improves the individual's quality of life and consequently positively impacts their health. In Brazil, despite the inclusion of aromatherapy in the Unified Health System since 2006, this therapeutic tool is not accepted by most health professionals. New studies are required to recognize the importance of aromatherapy in maintaining health and preventing many types of diseases.
